If books are poorly packed when moving home, this can cause damaged spines, torn pages and water damage in wet weather. However, house movers can follow these guidelines to protect your valuable books.
Firstly, obtain quality packing materials. These could include bubble wrap, tissue paper, sturdy cardboard or plastic boxes, packing tape, packing paper, silica gel, labels and a marker pen.
Pack paperback books spine down to prevent damaged edges. Don’t overfill boxes so they weigh too much, Fill any gaps with tissue paper. After packing books in a box cover them with bubble wrap and secure the box shut with packing tape. If using cardboard boxes also tape the sides.
Hardback books are heavy, so don’t put too many in a box and pack the heaviest ones on the bottom. Use silica gel packs to absorb moisture.
Fragile books should be wrapped in bubble wrap, and pieces of cardboard should be placed between them. The box should be labelled “fragileā, so the removals team knows to take extra care.
Make sure your hands are clean when packing antique books and don’t expose them to bright light as this can damage them.
Label and mark each box of books with a description of their contents and which room in the new home they are going in.
