What is the common etiquette when moving out of your home?

When you decide to move home, you may or may not know there is a common etiquette that is often followed when leaving a property. The following points – some more common than others – are likely to be appreciated by the new people who move in.

First and foremost, make sure that you leave the home clean and tidy. Any carpets and furniture left in the house should be cleaned to a good standard. Leaving some rubbish in the home’s bins after cleaning is acceptable, but be sure not to fill it or take the bin with you.

It would be very helpful for new homeowners to have a list of essential information provided by you when they move in. This may include alarm codes, waste collection dates, local takeaway details and any other information you think is useful. You could also add good luck welcome message.

You should leave all fittings and fixtures including light bulbs, plugs, lampshades and television aerial leads. However, anything that needs a tool to remove it should be left behind. This includes shelves fixed to the walls.

Unless stated in the contract, curtains don’t have to be left, but it is a good idea to ask the people moving in if they want them. Finally, it would be ideal to make your neighbours aware of when new people are moving in.
