A survey by estate agents Knight Frank asked 700 wealthy individuals from eleven countries what motivated them to move to Europe.
The number one reason was that, compared to areas of the world where there are geopolitical tensions, Europe is a relatively stable part of the world where the wealthy feel secure, and their privacy is respected. The next most important reasons for moving are employment opportunities and tax benefits, particularly in countries where property taxes are low.
Some move to Europe for warmer weather, but those that do so tend to be from the older generation. City locations are favoured by around 83% of survey respondents, with just 17% preferring coastal or rural locations. London is ranked top for its economic value and Vienna is voted as having the best quality of life. Locations ranked for both their economic status and life quality are Lake Geneva and Monaco.
Almost a fifth (19%) of the wealthy people surveyed said that they planned to apply for citizenship or acquire a second passport.
Of course, you don’t have to be wealthy to move outside of the UK to another European country. Many relocate for a new job or to retire.
