Fraud expert Louise Baxter of the National Trading Standards organisation says there have been cases of removal companies taking a deposit and either not turning up on moving day or putting possessions in a van and driving off, never to be seen again.

For instance, a mover who is travelling to a new country to start a new job may be contacted by their removal company to say they need an extra van to transport her possessions, for an additional cost of £4,000. If they do not pay the extra fee, the removal company may refuse to take any of their items.
Unfortunately, there are no legal barriers or regulation to setting up a trustworthy removal service. Some poor, inexperienced operators simply hire a van and claim to be a professional removal company.
